HUMPBACK WHALES : The humpback whale is a baleen whale (it has no teeth). Adults range in length from 40-50ft (12–16m) and have been known to weigh as much as 79,000lbs (36,000klg). Humpbacks have pectoral fins (1/3 the length of their entire body and a knobbly head (melon). It is often seen breaching and slapping the water. Males "sing" whale songs, which appears to have a role in mating. Humpbacks feed only in summer, in polar waters, and migrate to tropical or sub-tropical waters to breed and give birth in the winter. During the winter, humpbacks fast and live off their fat reserves. Their diet: krill and small fish. Due to over-hunting, its population fell by an estimated 90% before a whaling moratorium was introduced in 1966. They are recovering. However, entanglement in fishing gear, collisions with ships, and noise pollution also remain concerns and they are still considered a vulnerable species. Today, it is believed that there are over 70,000 Humpback Whales worldwide and they are now sought out by whale-watchers.

ABOUT ILIHIA
Iliihia, (ee lee HEE ah) was born and raised in the state of Hawaii. Her name means “stricken with awe” in Hawaiian. She is a true keiki o ka aina, (child of the land). From an early age, she was taught the importance of the spirit of Aloha. As an adult, she has combined her love for photography and nature with her equal desire to preserve and share the spirit of Aloha. This unique marriage between these three passions has been a tremendous asset in helping to spread the spirit of aloha throughout the world. Works from her expanding portfolio have been featured in the Americas, Europe, and Asia, in addition to several local art galleries
(including Patrick Ching's Naturally Hawaiian Gifts and Gallery). In addition, Ilihia's works will soon be featured in the Spiral Gallery & Cafe. Ilihia hopes her work stirs a sense of Aloha in everyone who views her photographs. In her free time, Ilihia maintains a supportive relationship with NOAA by volunteering with its Humpback whale counts, and Monk Seal watches.

You are encouraged to come back often to see new additions to various galleries. It is our sincere desire to share our journey with you as we continue to strive to commit the soul of nature to print.

WHALFIN : Shots of a whalfin. This is a hybrid: 1/2 Orca, 1/2 Bottlenose dolphin. This Whalfin weighs about 800 pounds which is markedly larger than Bottlenose dolphins. It is also much darker and has a melon (head) dorsal and fluke (tail) similar to whales.

DOLPHINS : Shots of Bottlenose Dolphins, Spinner Dolphins, and a Whalfin. Bottlenose Dolphins are dark gray at the top of their body and light gray on their underside. It has a beak-like/bottle-like snout(rostrum). This is where its "bottlenose" name comes from. In reality, its nose is the blowhole on top of its head. Adults range in length from 6-13ft (2-4m) and in weight from 330-1,430lbs (150kg to 650kg). Males are slightly longer and much heavier than females. However, the average length of an adult is about 8ft (2.5m)with weight ranges from 440-660lbs (200-300kg). The size of a dolphin varies with habitat. Those dolphins in warmer, shallower waters tend to have smaller bodies than those in cooler waters. The fluke (tail) and dorsal fin of a dolphin are formed of dense connective tissue and do not contain any bones or muscle. Dolphins movess itself forward by moving the flukes up and down. The pectoral flippers (at the sides of the body) are for steering; they contain bones that are very similar to the forelimbs of land mammals (from which dolphins and all other cetaceans evolved some 50 million years ago). Lifespan of a female Bottlenose Dolphin is about 40 years, and males rarely live more than 30 years. Every 5-8 minutes, the Bottlenose Dolphin, like all other mamals, needs to breathe air. On average, every 5-8 mins they rise to the surface to breathe through its blowhole. Its sleep is thus very light; in fact it is believed that the two halves of its brains take turns in sleeping and waking. Bottlenose Dolphins lives in groups (pods), usually containing up to 12 mamamals. Usually, a group of adult females and their babies live together in a pod, and juveniles in a mixed pod. Several of these pods can join together to form larger groups of one hundred dolphins or more. Males live mostly alone or in groups of 2-3 and join the pods for short periods of time. dolphins are known for its curiosity towards humans immersed in or near water. Dolphins have been known to rescue injured swimmers...thus earning them the nickname of "Man's best friend of the sea".
